Domestic fire alarms are fitted to BS5839-6
This is divided into 3 categories and further sub divided into 6 grades . 

LD1 - LD2 - LD3 

Grade A - Grade C - Grade D1 Grade D2 - Grade F1 - Grade F2
  • The 'L'  stands for 'life'.
  • The 'D' stands for 'domestic'.
  • Grade A - A commercial grade fire alarm that monitors for faults, system tampering and has a central control panel. This will be fitted as per BS5839-1 for commercial premises with a few exceptions.
  • Grade C - Detectors connected to a system being used for another purpose (i.e intruder alarm)
  • Grade D1 - Mains powered smoke alarms with a tamper proof standby battery, and interlinked if there is more than one fitted. They must only be interlinked within its own dwelling. 
  • Grade D2 - Mains powered smoke alarms with a user changeable standby battery, and interlinked if there is more than one fitted. They must only be interlinked within its own dwelling.
  • Grade F1 - Battery powered, independent smoke detectors with a tamper proof standby battery.
  • Grade F2 - Battery powered, independent smoke detector with a user changeable standby battery.

The number in the category dictates how much automatic detection is installed.

LD1 Classification:
  • A system installed throughout the dwelling incorporating detectors in all circulation spaces that form part of the escape routes from the dwelling, and in all rooms and areas in which fire might start, other than toilets, bathrooms and shower rooms 

LD2 Classification:
  • LD2 A system incorporating detectors in all circulation spaces that form part of the escape routes from the dwelling, and in all rooms or areas that present a high fire risk to occupants
LD3 Classification:
  • LD3 A system incorporating detectors in all circulation spaces that form part of the escape routes from the dwelling.
