L1 COMMERCIAL FIRE ALARMS
L1 Classification:
- A BS5839 L1 system will have automatic detectors on every escape route and in every room. It will also have detection in cupboards greater than 1m2 and voids greater than 800mm.
- Manual call points would be installed on all openings to fresh air and change of levels.
- Sounders would be installed throughout the building to achieve a minimum of 65dB of sound level (or 75dB at a bedhead if there is a sleeping risk). Sound would need to be 5dB above ambient noise up to a maximum of 120dB or flashing beacons would need to be fitted if this can not be achieved.

Typically used in:
- Hotels, hostels, student accommodation, houses in multiple occupation and similar premises with sleeping accommodation.
- Hospitals (with possible minor variations).
- Places of assembly (e.g. cinemas, theatres, nightclubs, exhibition halls, museums and galleries, leisure centres and casinos).
- Covered shopping centres.
- Residential care premises.
