L5 COMMERCIAL FIRE ALARMS
L5 Classification:
- A BS5839 L5 system will only have detectors where there is a very particular fire risk. It is not uncommon for there to only be one or two automatic detectors.
- Manual call points would be installed on all openings to fresh air and change of levels.
- Sounders would be installed throughout the building to achieve a minimum of 65dB of sound level (or 75dB at a bedhead if there is a sleeping risk). Sound would need to be 5dB above ambient noise up to a maximum of 120dB or flashing beacons would need to be fitted if this can not be achieved.
Typically used in:
- Transportation terminals.
- Prisons.
- Buildings in which other fire precautions, such as means of escape, depart from recognised guidance.
- Buildings with 'inner rooms', from which escape is possible only by passing through an 'access room', where there is inadequate vision between the 'inner room' and 'access room'.
- Buildings in which automatic fire detection is required to operate other fire protection systems (e.g. magnetic door holders).
- Situations in which fire could readily spread from an unoccupied area and prejudice means of escape from occupied areas.
